While there are many myths about the cystic hygroma very few people try to find the ultimate truth that is attached with this problem. First of all not all the cysts on your body are related to this problem. They naturally appear only in the neck portion of the patient. Also not all the tumors that appear on the neck cannot be categorized as the cystic hygroma. The first basic step is to understand the nature of the cyst to confirm it as CH. The fluid filled cysts that are the result of the blockage formed in lymphatic system can be considered as CH.
What is this lymphatic system? For those who do not have any medical background would definitely do not have an understanding of the term lymphatic system. This is network of vessels that are supposed to maintain the fluids that are in general found in the blood. If you see the blood that flows out then you would notice that the blood clots off and become thick while the watery fluids are absorbed on the location that the blood is spilt. Well these vessels in addition to carrying these fluids it also transports the fats along with the immune system cells. So this is where the problem is supposed to generate from.
If you have a general assumption that the Cystic hygroma that we are talking is all about one big cist it need not be so. You will have the scenarios where in the patients will have the multiple cysts concentrated around the neck region. When it occurs is quite suspense. It could be found during the fetal stage or once after the baby is born and grows into an age of 2 or 3. It could also be caused any time during the person’s life cycle before it comes to an end. In general cystic hygroma that is present in the developing baby would otherwise be termed as the hydrops which means the excess fluids that are present in the body. Sometimes the situation becomes even worse that the fetal would probably end their life cycle before even it comes out.
It does not mean that all cases of cystic hygroma will lead to end of life. The congenital CH will result in the remobal of the webbed neck or in the edema swelling or else even the lymphangioma that is a kind of benign yellowish tanned tumor that is found on the skin. This would probably be composed of the swollen lymph vessels. Only in few cases the hygroma can enlarge to a size that is larger than the size of fetus present in the womb of the mother. The pregnancy duration during which this cystic hygroma could occur is from 9 weeks to 16 weeks. So nearly 1% of fetus will get infected with this problem and hence is the reason this is the most crucial period for a pregnant women so that they do not get aborted.
While this problem can be caused by both environmental and genetic factors in the fetus it is mostly the genetic factors that create this problem. On the other hand the cystic hygroma that is caused in adults could be the multiple effects of the environment conditions. In the environmental factors alcohol abuse is the most problematic. Definitely alcohol consumption by the pregnant women could cause many problems for the fetus and hence is the reason they are recommended not to take it during the pregnancy period. Apart from the discussed points there could be lot many cases that have had different experience with the treatment of the cystic hyrgoma.
